My personal favourite of Wain's art is this more modest piece made with chalk and ink. A cheery cat is shown with a wide smile and underneath writes: "I am happy because everyone loves me."
There's something undeniably sad about it. Maybe it reflects Wain's struggle for happiness. His works brought so much joy, instrumental to changing the public's view of cats as silly, lovable creatures. While his sisters had him incarcerated, the people wanted to see him cared for in the way he deserved. He was loved. In his last years, I just hope that he knew it.
For me, this piece is a testament to the enduring human spirit and our innate connection to the world around us.
